Adopt A Working Cat
Some cats brought to La Plata County Humane Society are just not suited for typical homes. These feline friends are happiest when living primarily outside. Some may be stressed in social situations, while others may have litter box avoidance issues, but this does not mean there is no place for them in our community. If you have barn, stable, workshop, brewery or warehouse, you can save a life, receive companionship and adopt a potential expert in environmentally friendly rodent control.
Save a Feral, Adopt a Working Cat!
Every working cat is unique in their own way! Their personalities vary, most enjoy their independence and are not interested in being pals. Most of the feral/semi-feral cats in our working cat program are of this personality, and will sometimes become friendlier over time. They will need to adjust to their new environment and get to know you from afar.
We make it our mission to place all adoptable cats (this includes working cats!) in loving homes. All working cats have some things in common: A need for suitable shelter, like a barn, workshop, shed or garage. They will need to be fed and provided water because they can not survive on hunting alone, but don’t worry – feeding them will not deter them from hunting rodents.
What Do We Do For Working Cats?

Working Cat FAQ’s
What is a working cat?
Some cats brought to La Plata County Humane Society are just not suited for typical homes. These feline friends are happiest when living primarily outside. Some may be stressed in social situations, while others may have litter box avoidance issues, but this does not mean there is no place for them in our community. If you have barn, stable, workshop, brewery or warehouse, you can save a life, receive companionship and adopt a potential expert in environmentally friendly rodent control.
What types of places are suitable for working cats?
Barns, stables, workshops, breweries or warehouses have all benefited from working cats. To see if a working cat would be a good fit for you and your space, email or call one of our knowledgeable team members at (970) 259-2847 x101.
What do I need to provide my working cat?
You’ll need to provide food, water, and shelter for your working cat. You must provide hay or blankets for your working cat to cuddle up in for warmth. These things will help provide your cat with a warm “home base” to get away from the weather and potential predators.
What does LPCHS provide?
Your working cat will be spayed/neutered to prevent future litters of kittens. They will also be vaccinated and ear-tipped. Upon adoption, you will receive a copy of your cat’s health records.
How can I help my cat settle in their new home?
To help your cat get used to their new environment, you will need an area where the cat can have a “home base”. Make sure they have warm blankets and a place to hide. You’ll need to be patient as your cat gets used to their new space. There are lots of new smells and sounds.
Doesn't it get too cold in the winter?
You can help protect your working cat from our winter weather by providing them with shelter and warm spaces. Leave some blankets or hay for your cat, they will have a place to get out of the wind, snow, and rain, and will be able to survive well.
Will my cat hunt?
Most cats are great hunters and their natural instinct will be to provide you expert rodent control, but of course, we can’t guarantee that every working cat will be an expert hunter.
Will my cat eat birds and other wildlife on my property?
Cats are opportunistic feeders. Providing them with a steady food source will reduce the effect they have on traditional prey, like birds.
