Licensing

Licensing your pet is not just required by law, but there are many benefits that come with it:

  • Licensing fees support the mission of La Plata County Humane Society.
  • Reunites lost pets to their families.
  • Reduces fines if your pet is ever picked up by Animal Protection.
  • Keeps you in compliance with local animal ordinances.

License Fees

City  residents
Altered animal – $10 per year
Unaltered animal – $55 per year (license and permit required)

County residents
Altered animal – $10 per year
Unaltered animal – $25 per year

*Replacement tags are available for an additional $2.

City and County residents may purchase a 1 or 3 year license. If you are 60 years of age or older, you qualify for a free licensing with valid photo ID.

Requirements

  • Proof of your pet’s current rabies certificate
  • Proof of spay/neuter
  • Valid photo ID
  • Payment; cash or credit card (we do not accept personal checks)

Pet Licenses May be Purchased

Online: You may purchase your pet’s license online following a few easy steps. Please visit this link: Pet License Application. After you submit your information and payment, you will receive your tag and certificate by mail. There is a $2 convenience fee per transaction. Please note: Tags are intended to last 1 or 3 years, depending on your purchase. If this is a renewal, you will receive an updated certificate and tag with the current year. License certificates and tags will be mailed within 5 business days.

Onsite: Licenses may be purchased at La Plata County Humane Society, 1111 S. Camino del Rio, Durango CO 81303.
