Each year, La Plata County Humane Society receives hundreds of litters of unwanted puppies and kittens that are too young to be adopted. By fostering homeless pets you provide a safe and loving environment in which they can develop until they are old enough to be adopted. You receive unconditional kitten and/or puppy love and the knowledge that you are saving lives! Fostering is an excellent opportunity to share love and affection with a homeless pet without making a lifetime commitment.

Foster Parent Requirements:

  • Be 18 years or older and be willing to provide affection and care to our animals in need.

  • Have all of your pets current on their vaccinations.

  • Have landlord consent (if renting).

  • Have appropriate facilities in which to house animals. (Foster pets must be kept in an isolated area made of water resistant surfaces).

  • Be able to bring foster animals to Humane Society for scheduled appointments.

  • Agree to allow an agent of Humane Society to inspect your foster area once a year (in accordance with PACFA).

  • Understand that all animals remain the property of La Plata County Humane Society and must be returned for medical care and adoption.

  • Understand that despite the best efforts of foster families and Humane Society staff, some animals may still have to be humanely euthanized due to medical or behavioral problems.

Contact Summer if you are interested in fostering.
