La Plata County Humane Society Animal Protection Officers are dedicated to the welfare of animals and provide their services seven days a week. Their duties include enforcement of city and county animal ordinances, the investigation of cruelty complaints, and response to reports of injured or distressed animals.
Most concerns reported to animal protection officers involve problems created when dogs are premitted to run at large and include:
Property Damage Complaints
Death or injury to pets and wildlife and/or dogfight inuries.
Unprovoked Dog Bites
Substantial physical injury to citizens.
Creation of Hazardous Driving Conditions
May cause automobile accidents resulting in injury or death to citizens and to dog.
Dog Nuisances Complaints
Include dogs urinating or defecating on property, dogs raiding garbage bins, dogs chasing pedastrians, bicyclists and cars.
Uncontroled Breeding Problems
Breed with each other or with restrained dogs which leads to production of unwanted puppies.
Spread of Diseases and Parasites
Spreading diseases such as parvo,(an often-fatal gastrointes-tinal diarrhea), and Rabies. May spread parasites such as fleas, mange, giardia, round worms and hook worms. Disease such as bubonic plague, ringworm, giardia and rabies can be spread from dogs to humans.
